The Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana or Square Colosseum (it has several other names too), was commissioned by Benito Mussolini for the 1942 ”Esposizione Universale Roma”, the Roman Universal Exhibition, to celebrate twenty years of fascism. It never took place due to the war, but it gave Rome an almost finished business district out of the city centre, like Paris’s La Défense. If you’re into architecture and are travelling to Rome it’s a great site to explore. Wouldn’t say it’s quiet, but your not being trampled by the hordes of tourists elsewhere in Rome.
